to see fair Padua, nursery of arts,
I am arrived…”

-Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew, Act I, Scene 1

Travel Itinerary

8 days, 7 nights: October 12–19, 2025

Day 1 - Sunday, October 12: Florence
Arrive in Florence. Meet for a welcome aperitivo and our first on-the-ground lesson on the Renaissance culture that inspired the Bard.

Day 2 - Monday, October 13: Florence
Forget the museum lines —we’ll tour off-the-beaten-path gems to set your bibliophilic heart aflutter. Finish the day together discussing sonnets over one of Tuscany’s celebrated wines.

Day 3 - Tuesday, October 14: Florence - Verona
Enjoy a leisurely final breakfast in Florence before jumping a train to Verona. After an orientation to Montague-Capulet territory, enjoy a tasting led by a local expert in this Italian wine hub.

Day 4 - Wednesday, October 15: Verona
Explore the long history of Italy’s most famous lovers. In the afternoon, roam Verona’s famous city walls on your own. Regroup to investigate Italy’s burgeoning nightlife scene.

Day 5 - Thursday, October 16: Padua
Day trip to Padua, setting of Taming of the Shrew, and a treasure in its own right for its connections to Dante and Galileo (not to mention St. Anthony’s lower jaw).

Day 6 - Friday, October 17: Verona - Venice
Toast Verona with a last cappuccino and then take the short trip to Venice. Walk this watery dream-city on your own until we meet for a classic spritz cocktail or mocktail and Othello discussion.

Day 7 - Saturday, October 18: Venice
Get ready for a final full day of secret Renaissance haunts and Shakespearean easter eggs. A raucous farewell dinner closes out our adventure.

Day 8 - Sunday, October 19: Venice - home!
Say goodbye to the group and to Italy (unless you’re extending your travels)!

Program Highlights

  • Swank Accomodations

Stay at 4-star accommodations in three different cities - because you can’t study the beauty of the Renaissance without similarly stylish lodgings.

  • Pre-Trip Study

Your study abroad starts at home, with six weeks of online seminars on Shakespeare’s Italian plays and sonnets - plus some bonus offerings online and in person in Los Angeles. You’ll be led by two professors of Renaissance literature—your personal guides from start to finish.

  • Daily Excursions

From Shakespearean locales to other book lovers’ must-sees, from unmissable attractions to off-the-beaten-path gems, you’ll see the best these cities have to offer—with enough free time to find your own favorite places, or to enjoy that extra nap, cappuccino, or glass of vino.

  • Classes in Italy

Gather each afternoon or evening for a short session preparing you for the next day’s art, literature, and experiences. Skip the extra readings in favor of an evening stroll any time you want—or linger with us for more literature and camaraderie.

  • Books

We’ll send you our favorite editions of the poems and plays we’re studying—including plenty of background information and scholarship, and even some drawings for when you get tired of iambic pentameter.

  • Transportation

We’ll handle high-speed train tickets between cities and all of the costs and

logistics of moving around between stations, hotels, and excursion sites. We’ll even take an artsy photo of you riding the vaporetto (water bus) in Venice with the wind in your hair.

  • Aperitivo (Italian happy hour)

Reward yourself for your hard work (self-improvement through literature isn’t easy!) with a daily group aperitivo. Let us treat you to our favorite local haunts, snacks, and drinks (wine, cocktails, and/or nonalcoholic choices).

  • Yoga

Balance your mind’s good work with a treat for your body: optional yoga sessions with Q, a longtime yogi and certified instructor. Suitable for all ages/bodies/experience levels!

  • Community

With a maximum size of 16, our program is designed to build a tight-knit community. And did we mention that we love traveling, and learning, and teaching? Join us and let us share our joy with you!
